Rioja, Santo Domingo de la Calzada, and more. This is the privilege of travelling between Burgos and La Rioja.

Peace and quiet in the village

Quintanilla del Monte in Rioja (Burgos) is a very small village.

With just 28 registered residents in 2012. Tucked away from the noise and bustle of the N-120 road, it is an ideal place to escape the daily stresses of city life. Its distance from Villamayor del Río and other towns means you can enjoy star-filled night skies.

Místico El Camino

Just 900 metres from the Way of St James, we feel a strong sense of fellowship

Fellowship and the life-changing experience of the Camino. We’re located on the 9th stage of the French Way from Roncesvalles. This stage begins in Santo Domingo de la Calzada, in La Rioja, and ends in the province of Burgos. If you’re travelling by bike, please note that we offer a free bike storage service where your bike will be safe overnight. And if you’re walking, you can give us a call and we’ll come down to pick you up in Villamayor del Río so you don’t have to walk the 900 metres that separate us.

Since we first opened, we’ve been offering accommodation and a place to rest to pilgrims of all nationalities. Our commitment to the Camino means we enjoy the company of every pilgrim who wants to rest and recharge their batteries with us.

World-class

Cultural tourism

Our rural hotel is situated close to some of Spain’s most important tourist attractions. This allows you to enjoy the best of what Burgos and La Rioja have to offer.

Cathedrals, monasteries, unique archaeological sites and other places you simply mustn’t miss. Special, one-of-a-kind sites, some of which have even been declared World Heritage Sites. Are you going to miss out?

Atapuerca: A Unique Site

About 20 minutes from our country hotel in Ibeas de Juarros lies a world-renowned site for human evolution. You can visit three of the most significant archaeological sites in the Sierra de Atapuerca: the Sima del Elefante, La Galería and La Gran Dolina.

The Atapuerca Archaeological Park is a highly recommended visit, especially if you’re travelling with children. They’ll see and learn a great deal about life in prehistoric times.

Monumental Burgos

Just 50 kilometres away lies one of the most beautiful and culturally rich cities you can visit. Starting with its Cathedral of Santa María la Mayor, a Gothic masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Moving on to the Monastery of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas and the Miraflores Charterhouse. And finally, there are many more monuments and places of interest, such as Burgos Castle and the Arch of Santa María.

The impressive and ultra-modern Museum of Human Evolution houses some of the most important finds from the Atapuerca archaeological sites. Designed to exhibit and explain the subject that gives it its name: Human Evolution.

Historic Santo Domingo de la Calzada

About a 15-minute drive away lies Santo Domingo de la Calzada, a town nestled on the banks of the River Oja. Its old town has been designated a “Site of Historical and Artistic Interest” since 1973.

Don’t miss the cathedral and its free-standing tower. Take a stroll through the old town whilst sampling the Ahorcaditos and other delicacies from its renowned bakeries. It’s one of those little pleasures in life that you won’t want to miss. And if you manage to visit this town during the Fiestas del Santo (1–15 May) or the Ferias de la Concepción and the Medieval Market (4–8 December), the experience will be complete.

Belorado con Tirón

Located 6 km from La Aldea Encantada, this is a town with over 2,000 inhabitants, through which the River Tirón flows. In 2013, the Radio Communication Museum opened its doors, boasting a collection of highly unusual items and ‘surprises’ such as a Russian cosmonaut’s suit on display.

The Plaza Mayor, which is the hub of social life for the locals; the Church of Santa María, the Church of San Pedro and the castle ruins are just some of the tourist attractions you can visit. The heart of the ‘Riojilla Burgalesa’ region, opening the door to the most attractive tourist destinations between Burgos and La Rioja.

Wild Nature

The Enchanted Village

It is situated in a naturally stunning setting. On the edge of the Sierra de la Demanda, it allows us to enjoy its forests of oak, beech and pine trees. It is not uncommon to spot roe deer, wild boar and other wildlife in the immediate vicinity of our rural hotel. There are several trails that start just a few kilometres from our rural hotel, allowing you to immerse yourself in spectacular scenery.

One of the routes we can take in the Sierra de la Demanda area is the one that circles the Alba Dam, near Villafranca Montes de Oca. It’s almost 10 kilometres long and takes about 3 hours to complete. A low-difficulty route through beech forests, passing through the Oca Gorge, the abandoned village of Alba and the Alba Dam.

There are also little gems that blend human endeavour with nature, such as the nearby Puente del Diablo (Devil’s Bridge) in San Miguel de Pedroso. A bridge over the River Tirón that marks the boundary of an area with pools where you can swim in the summer months. Legend has it that its name comes from the period when the original bridge was being built. The workers who built it gave it this name because the river’s floods kept washing it away, preventing the work from being completed.

Ancient

Skiing in Valdezcaray

Just over 40 kilometres away, there are 24 slopes catering to all levels of ability. Around 20 km of slopes in a resort offering all the facilities you’d expect: a ski school, equipment hire, snow cannons, bars and restaurants, a children’s play area, and more.

Plenty of possibilities

The area offers a wide range of activities, from paintball and paragliding to caving and hiking. These activities are not just a form of active leisure; many companies use them to improve team cohesion and productivity.

Special mention should be made of the opportunity to visit the sixth largest cave in Europe, featuring highly unusual geological formations: the Fuentemolinos Cave.

So you never get bored

Wine, wineries and gastronomy

Wine tourism

Just a half-hour’s drive away lies what could be considered the birthplace of many of the great wineries of the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin. Many of the wines that enjoy the greatest national and international prestige originate from this region, which boasts a winemaking tradition stretching back thousands of years. Visiting one of the most iconic wineries and enjoying the scenery offered by its vineyards and dark soil will be an experience that any visitor will enjoy and remember forever.

Thanks to an agreement we have with a small Rioja winery, we can arrange a guided tour with a tasting for those guests who request it in advance.
